Waltham Abbey - Waltham in Wartime
Waltham in Wartime

Waltham in Wartime is the last collaborative book to be compiled by Raymond Sears and Jonathan Foster. It contains 270 black and white images over 136 pages.

This book concentrates predominantly on the twentieth century and how the people of Waltham Abbey experienced war. The book is liberally illustrated with local photographs collected by Ray from the Boer War, the Great War and the Second World War; and Second World War photographs taken by Edward Carter, the town's Chief Air Raid Warden.

Ray's first hand experience of the town during the Second World War and his long-held desire to record and share the wartime experiences of other local people has provided the narrative for this book.

Ray started collating material for this book back in the 1990s when he researched the gun sites and pill boxes of the area with Bryn Elliott. We are grateful to Bryn for his advice and contributions to this publication.
